Partners in Profit, the right way. 

There are many examples of Employee Operated Companies in our industry. In some cases, it is that the owner has multiple locations and can't be in several places at one time. Typically, a manager is put in place, given specific performance requirements and generally some form of commission based pay, based on the performance of the shop. Occassionally, some amount of profit is also shared with the manager, but seldom would there be benefit for all. 

In other cases, owners decide they are "the owner" and they don't need to work. They put the load of daily productivity and profitability on the manager, with varying degrees of support, and typically accept whatever the outcome, as long as "the owner" doesn't have to be involved.  Typically, there is little benefit to the folks doing the actual work, in this scenario.

Rarely, is an Employee Operated Company designed to primarily benefit the individuals that perform the work. We are one of those rare companies. After 38 years, the founding owners are now on a 40 hour work week. 

At Midas Kalkaska, the primary responsibility for daily production is the responsibility of the staff, lead by two managers, one of which is in line to take over as owner in the next several years. The current owners will be slowly stepping back, over that same period, as their daily duties are taken over by existing staff. 

This program began in January of 2017. Since that time company profits have been split between current staff (60%) and the company bank account(40%).  The company bank account funds are reserved to purchase/replace equipment, take care of unforseen expenses and in general support the health of the business for the benefit and security of the staff and owners.  Company financial performance is posted daily and available to all, including profits and expenses. Close scrutiny is encouraged.
